Instructions

Purchase Mothballs

1. Use caution when you purchase mothballs, some are illegal. The University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Newsletter (UM) warns consumers that legal mothballs are white, while "illegal mothballs are often sold in pastel colors and resemble candy" or gumballs. Legal mothballs come in packaging with an EPA registration number listed on the outside. Additionally, instructions and warnings will also appear English. UM also recommends not buying mothballs with only Chinese characters on the label.

2. Purchase mothballs at a reputable bricks and mortar retailer and avoid illegal knockoffs. Mothballs are inexpensive and cost less than $5 a pound. Your local hardware store, garden center or supermarket should have a variety of quantities from which you can choose. Large retail chain superstores also carry mothballs. Lowe's sells mothballs in the hardware section and Home Depot features mothballs in their seasonal wares section.

3. Buy mothballs online. When purchasing mothballs online, buyer beware. Whether you are buying in bulk or a small retail quantity, only buy mothballs from a store you know and trust. Purchasing mothballs from overseas retailers is not recommended. Examine the online picture to ensure the mothballs are white and the label information is presented in English. The cost of shipping the mothballs may be more than the mothballs themselves. Both amazon.com and Ebay.com sell mothballs online.

4. Buy only what you need. To avoid having extra mothballs only purchase what you need. According to the package of Enoz Old Fashioned Moth Balls, use 14 ounces of moth balls for up to 43.7 cubic square feet of floor space.
