Build A Stand Alone Car Port For A Trailer

Building a stand-alone carport for your trailer is an alternative to keeping it outside, if a structure such as a garage or pole barn is not available. A prefabricated carport can be bought and put together, or to save money you can build one yourself. To do this you can use pressure-treated 2-by-4-inch boards. The project requires you to assemble separate pieces of framing and then attach them to form the structure. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine where the carport will be located and measure the dimensions with the tape measure. Drive a stake into the ground at each corner with the hammer.

2. Measure eight of the 2-by-4-inch boards at 10 feet and make a cut mark with the pencil. Cut the boards with the circular saw.

3. Measure and cut nine of the 6-foot 2-by-4-inch boards.

4. Assemble a frame using two of the 10-foot 2-by-4-inch boards and two of the 6-foot 2-by-4-inch boards. Secure the ends of the boards together with nails using the nail gun. Place a third 2-by-4-inch board in the center of the frame and secure it with nails. Repeat this step to assemble an additional two frames.

5. Set the assembled frames upright and place them together in the shape of a "U." Place a corner bracket at the top corner where two frames meet. Secure the bracket with the nail gun. Attach additional corner brackets at the center and bottom.

6. Place one of the remaining 10-foot 2-by-4-inch boards across the top of the two side sections at the front of the carport. Secure the 2-by-4-inch board with the nail gun. Position the remaining 2-by-4-inch board so that it is 5 feet behind the front 2-by-4-inch board with the nail gun.

7. Place the 8-inch U-bolts over the bottom boards of the frame and drive them into the ground using the hammer. These will keep the carport secured to the ground.

8. Cover the roof and the sides of the carport with a vinyl or canvas tarp. Secure the tarp to the frame with a rope or by stapling it with the staple gun.
