Custom living room cabinets are designed to look and feel like the quality furnishings that fill your living space. Whether they are made of cheaper woods with smart veneer facings or solid throughout, they are accurately made-to-measure so they precisely fit into nooks or along living room walls. Quality construction, materials and hardware set aside custom living room cabinets from off-the-shelf varieties. They can readily be assembled right out of the box with little effort and few tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Sort out all cabinet packaging and remove all components and hardware from their crates. Boxes should be labeled for easy identification of the contents, and numbered so you'll know the order in which to assemble them. The box order should correspond to how the cabinets fit together for assembly.

2. Empty the contents of each box one at a time and neatly set out the pieces in a row. Remove plastic wrap from all cabinet components. Set out like pieces together such as sides, drawer bases and shelves. Cut open plastic packages holding hardware and supports but keep these items in their containers and use one by one to avoid misplacing them. Discard unused packaging into the empty box for disposal later. Make sure the contents of one box doesn't get mixed with contents from adjacent boxes.

3. Assemble drawers and doors before mounting onto the larger cabinet sections. Read specific directions provided by the manufacturer to help with assembly. Insert dowels into slots and use wood glue to secure all joints. Attach hardware such as hinges, drawer glides and handles using the accompanying screws and a screwdriver. Install clips and door guards where applicable.

4. Complete base and wall unit assembly and prepare for add-on components. Fit appropriate dowels and then glue together all joints to form the main structure of the cabinets. Use a rubber mallet to ensure snug fittings along all seams. Inspect the bases and all around exteriors to check for completion of units. Put on framing and trim using wood glue and wipe up completely any excess glue with a damp lint-free cloth. Add shelf hooks where needed.

5. Connect shelves, doors and drawers to the main cabinets to complete the assembly. Connect cabinet door hinges onto the main unit and slide in drawers to complete the look.
