Ideal Closet Size

Size up your stuff before you design your closet.

Designing a closet takes time and patience as many things need to be considered. The size of the closet is probably the most scrutinized part of the design. Closets range in size based on several factors, like the size of the home and what will go into the closet once it is finished. Does this Spark an idea?

Bedroom Closet Sizing

Sizing up a bedroom closet is easy if you follow a few standards. Most clothing takes at least 2 feet of hanging space, so most bedroom closets are 2-feet deep. If you plan to hang large jackets, expand this measurement to 28 inches deep. The height of the closet is simply the height of your interior walls. No additional planning is needed. To determine the width, factor in how many clothes you own. Four feet of closet rod length is required to hang up one's person's clothing. If your closet is for two, make it at least 8-feet wide.

Coat Closet Size

The size of a coat closet is also standardized. Jackets and winter coats take up more hanging space, so coat closets are at least 28 inches deep. If you want to make yours larger, expand it to 30 inches deep. The width of the closet depends on how many coats you want to hang. Typically, four coats will hang on a foot of closet rod length, so if your family has four people and each one has two coats, make the coat closet at least 2-feet wide. Expanding this width to 3 feet adds room for guests' coats and more storage along the floor for shoes and boots.

Linen Closets

A linen closet stores sheets, towels and other household linens like tablecloths. These closets range in size, but a general rule is to make the closet about 2-feet deep and 3-feet wide. Shelves inside the closet are usually spaced 12 inches apart and take up the entire width of the closet. Linen closets, like all other closets, are the same height as the home's interior walls. Determine the amount of linens in your household before planning your linen closet size. Towels usually take up 12 to 15 inches of shelving space width while sheets take up 10 to 12 inches. Several sets of sheets and several towels will stack on a shelf with a 12-inch height.

Walk-In Closets

When designing the walk-in closet, there are few standards. These closets range in size, depending on the storage needs of the individual and the space available to designers. Walk-ins are at least 5-feet wide with about 24 inches to hang clothing on a closet rod and 3 feet of space to walk around. Expanding the width only increases the amount of space for shelving and, with double-stacked closet rods, you can fit twice the closet rod length in a smaller amount of space. Large walk-in closets are 12 x 12 feet and even larger. Don't make the walk-in closet larger than the bedroom, and balance space for storage with living space.
