Share A Clothes Closet

Emptying the closet of all the items is the first step in organizing the area.

Sharing a clothes closet with another person is often frustrating and annoying, particularly if both individuals enjoy making a fashion statement and have tons of clothes. The key to utilizing closet space, no matter how small, is organization. Purchasing the correct storage and closet organizers helps create a space that enables each individual to find the necessary clothing item quickly and efficiently. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove all the clothing, shoes and other accessories from the closet. Decide which items are never worn, and put these into a box or garbage bag designated for donation. Toss any items that are ripped, stained or worn beyond repair. Once both individuals take care of this first step, they won't have as much to store in the closet area.

2. Invest in different-sized plastic storage containers with lids. Stick a self-adhesive label or attach a sheet of paper with cellophane tape onto the end of the box. List all the items you store in the box individually or by category, such as "Lori's sweaters." Place out-of-season clothing into these boxes. Stack them in the vertical space in the closet or, an even better idea is to place them in the attic, basement or other storage area until the next season. Another idea is to invest in storage containers that slide underneath your bed on wheels.

3. Place other items that you do not use often in the plastic containers, such as scarves or seasonal sports gear. Store these in the bottom of the closet, on high shelves or other areas in your home. If you both have many clothing items for storage, it is a wise idea to make a running list in a small notebook of where the items are stored in your home. Stack the boxes in your closet or elsewhere with the items you use less often near the bottom.

4. Hang a second clothes rod in your closet. This effectively doubles the space. Hang skirts and pants on the lower rod and put the tops, blazers and sweaters on the top rod.

5. Organize your own clothing by color, such as beige, navy, white and black. If you share clothes with your closet mate, you can intermingle all the clothing in this way. If not, imagine an invisible dividing line down the center of the closet to separate your clothing.

6. Mount decorative hooks or racks with multiple hooks on the inside of your closet and door. This allows you to hang belts, ties and accessories where you can locate them easily.
