Make Doll Wardrobes

Teach a child to sew her own doll's clothing.

Making your own doll wardrobes saves money and allows you to custom fit and design your doll's clothes for your specific preferences. Instead of throwing out old, worn or stained clothing, use the leftover scraps to sew new outfits for your doll collection. Use other odds and ends from around the house to add as embellishments, such as extra buttons or pieces of ribbon, yarn or lace. The relative simplicity of assembling doll clothing can also be a good introduction to the world of sewing for younger children; you may even decide to make yourself a matching outfit.

Instructions

1. Take you doll's measurements. These should include around the chest, from shoulder to waist, from hip to ankle, and arm length. Use these measurements when sizing your doll's clothing.

2. Sketch a drawing on paper of the pattern you would like to make. The sketch should be done to size, as it will be used as the template for when you cut fabric. When you are satisfied with the pattern, cut out the paper template.

3. Pin your paper template onto your fabric. Cut around the template, leaving an extra 1/4 inch for seam allowance. Remember, you will need to cut two pieces from the fabric, one each for the front and back.

4. Thread your needle. Holding the two pieces of fabric back to back, sew the seams. Turn your project right-side out and place your new wardrobe item on your doll.
