Make A Drawer Unit For A Closet

Create a place for all of those small clothing items.

Many closets offer plenty of storage space for hanging items but not much for other items, such as pants and socks. You can build a drawer unit to go into your closet, providing space for these pieces of clothing. This unit will be built out of plywood, which is available at any hardware store. Many larger stores will do all the cutting for you, requiring you to simply put together the pieces. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

The Frame

1. Measure the height, width and depth available for a drawer unit in the closet. These measurements will determine the size of the drawers.

2. Cut two pieces of 3/4-inch plywood that match the height and depth of the space.

3. Subtract 1 1/2 inches from the width measurement. Cut two pieces of plywood that match the modified width and depth and one additional piece for each drawer.

4. Make a box out of the two long pieces and two of the shorter pieces. The shorter pieces should be sandwiched between the longer ones. Use bar clamps to hold the box together.

5. Drill 1/16-inch pilot holes every 3 inches along each corner and assemble the frame using 2-inch wood screws.

6. Slide one of the other plywood pieces into the frame and position it so there are 8 inches of space between the bottom of the frame and the piece.

7. Drill pilot holes through the sides of the frame and into the ends of this piece and screw it in place. The 8-inch space that is created will fit one drawer.

8. Screw additional pieces in place, each with 8 inches of open space between them. Leftover space at the top can be used as a cubby for shoes and other small objects.

9. Slide the frame in place in the closet.

The Drawers

10. Cut one piece of 1/2-inch plywood that matches the small pieces from the previous section.

11. Cut two pieces of 1/2-inch plywood that match the modified width from the previous section, and is 7 1/2-inches tall. These will be the front and back of the drawer.

12. Cut two pieces of 1/2-inch plywood for the sides of the drawer. These should be 7 1/2-inches tall. The width will be the depth measurement from the previous section minus 1 inch.

13. Assemble a box out of the front, back and side pieces. The side pieces should be sandwiched between the front and back pieces.

14. Apply a bead of wood glue to each joint and clamp the box together with bar clamps. Wipe off any glue that oozes out with a paper towel.

15. Nail the box together with 4d nails hammered in every 2 inches.

16. Allow the glue to dry for the time recommended on the bottle.

17.Place the large piece of plywood on the box. Glue, clamp and nail it in place and allow the glue to dry.

18. Flip over the completed drawer and screw a knob onto the front. Use a knob with a 1/2-inch screw already attached.

19. Slide the drawer in place. Build the rest of the drawers following the same steps.
