Make Your Closet Modern

A modern closet provides storage beyond a place for hangers.

With the right design, a modern closet offers more space and convenience than its old-fashioned counterpart. Many old closets consist of one shelf toward the top of the space and a single, long bar to hang clothes on. The bottom of the space is left open, leaving it for clutter, half-hidden from view by hanging items. The modern closet typically does away with this old notion and takes a closet to a whole new level in storage. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Change the exterior doors. Do away with the old-fashioned, outward opening, hinged door and replace with small sliders made to match the room. Add smooth mirrors to the exterior of the doors for added decoration and to make the space look larger.

2. Divide the space in the closet. Measure the largest wall of the closet and divide in half or in thirds, depending on the size.

3. Design the new interior based on need. For the person with many suits, dresses or other items which require hanging, devote more space to hanger bars. For those with more folded clothing items, undergarments or shoes, choose more shelving and drawer space.

4. Install a closet organizer in the space. The organizer should have both shelves and drawers for maximum storage of items. If dividing the closet in half, place the organizer on one or the other side. For a closet divided into thirds, place the organizer in the middle. The sides of the piece act as holders for hanger bars.

5. Install hanging bars in layers. Place one bar close to the top of the closet and one half-way down. This doubles the amount of items that can be hung in half the original space.

6. Maximize closet space by adding a shoe rack or hooks on the exterior doors. This modern feature assists in keeping the closet floor clear of clutter.
