Virtual Closet Designing

If you need to organize the items in your home, one of the most effective ways to do that is by remodeling a closet. And one of the easiest ways to remodel a closet is by designing a virtual closet with the help of free programs offered by manufacturers of closet supplies. By clicking a mouse and dragging and dropping assorted items into your virtual closet, you can design a space that works best for you. Does this Spark an idea?

Assess Your Needs

Look in your current closet and think about what works and does not work for you. Do you like to hang most of your clothes but don't have enough rods? Do you have enough hanging space but drawers that are overstuffed? Now is the time to remedy those problems. Count how many pairs of shoes you have so you can designate enough space to store them. Consider how much space you need to neatly store accessories. All of these aspects can be worked into your newly designed closet.

Take Measurements

Arm yourself with a tape measure, paper and pencil and begin taking measurements of your closet. Take note of floor-to-ceiling height. Measure the width of the door and how much wall space is on either side of it. Be sure to allow for any wood trim around the door. If you are keeping any aspects of your current closet, measure those, too, so you can work around them. Note the location of light switches and electrical outlets.

Go Online

Search online for a free closet design program. See the Resources section for three companies that offer this free service. There are many others. Begin by browsing through the companies' showrooms and design galleries. You might see something you like that you hadn't even considered.

The first thing the programs will ask you to do is to "build" your walls so you know what will fit in your closet. You also can select your shelving material and the finish you want on hardware such as hanging rods and drawer pulls. After entering the dimensions of your closet and choosing your options, many programs allow you to click to have the program design a layout that it feels works best for you. Go ahead and click that, but don't feel that you have to stick to that design. For example, you can take out a set of suggested shelves and replace it with a double hang bar, a stack of baskets, drawers, or empty space where you can install a mirror.
