Ideas for Curtains As Closet Doors
In certain spaces, curtains are a more ideal closet door covering than a hinged, sliding or pocket door. Curtains are the solution for especially tall doorways, closets lacking space for door installation and makeshift closets, such as an alcove or a nook under a staircase. Curtains on Rings
Curtain panels mounted by rings easily slide back and forth across the rod, which is convenient for a closet you use often. Several types of rings are available. One type of ring, much like a shower curtain, requires finished openings along the top of the panel for the ring to pass through. Another type of ring simply pinches the fabric to hold it, like a clothespin, requiring little sewing. One panel is sufficient for a single-size door frame; double-size doors are better off with two panels rather than a single long one.
Curtains With Grommets
Grommets operate much the same way as rings. The difference between the two is that rings attach to the top of the curtain while grommets are installed in the panel about an inch from the top hem. You can make these curtains yourself with a set of grommets and a grommet installation tool. They come in a wide variety of metallic finishes and colors and are typically used with heavier fabrics rather than sheers. The resulting look is more modern than traditional. For a closet door, mount the rod inside the frame to achieve a look that complements the clean grommet aesthetic.
Curtains on Knobs
Knob mounts bring an architectural element to the room and are an option best suited for less frequented closets. They're round and protrude from the wall or door frame, much like doorknobs. They come in an array of styles, from brushed metal to wood-carved flower blossoms. Curtains hang from a series of knobs installed along the door frame by short fabric loops. The curtain doesn't slide back and forth, but you can, however, use tiebacks to secure them in the open position when the closet is in use. Flat Folded Panels
Flat folded window treatments are panels that don't have gathers, and, as a result, are flat in appearance while closed. These curtains retain their smooth look when open because they're crisply folded back rather than pushed back on the rod. The overall look is a clean, geometric silhouette. You can fold them back by taking the bottom hem and buttoning it to the opposite side edge, just a few feet up from the floor, or by tying the inside edge to the outside edge midway up the panel. When folded back, the curtain reveals its complementary lining.
