You can find sliding closet doors in many apartments because, in theory, they can save space - there are no doors which swing inwards and outwards. Yet, they are not everyone's cup of tea as the sliding doors prevent you from seeing into your entire closet all at once. Some are heavy, and pushing them open several times a day can be tedious. Sliding doors are also an obvious sign of a closet, preventing an air of mystery and intrigue. However, you can alter sliding doors to work with your own individuality. Does this Spark an idea?
Mirrored Sliding Doors
You can purchase sliding doors that have mirrored exteriors which will reflect a ton of light in your room, make your room seem bigger and give you an enormous full length mirror for dressing in front of each morning. At the same time, some people find huge mirrored closet doors gaudy or an overly-apparent sign of a closet door and would prefer something discreet. You can spray privacy film all over the surface of the mirrors; this will give them a foggy, muted look and change their appearance dramatically. You can use stencils and apply the privacy film all over the closet doors, creating a type of pattern. Alternatively, you can throw a large sheer curtain over the sliding doors. In this way the mirror will still reflect from beneath the fabric but in a subtle glittery manner.
Bold Ideas
For those who find standard sliding doors dull and tedious, you certainly don't have to live with them and changing them is an easy fix. You can paint bold stripes of contrasting colors on them or even a full fledged mural. For urban loft spaces with sliding doors, consider spray painting some graffiti on the doors to give the room an edgy feel. Alternatively, for a home office you could install large panels of dry-erase board to the exterior of the sliding doors and make the outside of your closet one giant movable sliding dry-erase board.
Modern Sliding Glass Doors
Those with a contemporary decor style might want to consider installing glass sliding closet doors. While clear glass doors would give the items on the inside of your closet very little privacy, it's still a bold statement and gives a room a sleek effect. For those not brave enough for clear glass, you can also purchase tinted glass shades in striking colors like purple or black. Alternatively, you can remove your sliding glass doors altogether and hang a sheer or velvet curtain from the ceiling on the inside of your closet down to the floor. It will give the room a more textured effect.
