Ideas To Restylize Mirrored Closet Doors

Though mirrored closet doors were once a design staple to make a room brighter and appear larger, mirrored closet doors are now an outdated design piece that can prevent a room from progressing into a contemporary design aesthetic. Before you decide to ditch the doors and start over, consider some DIY design projects that not only update mirrored doors, but turn them into key design elements of a modern interior space. Does this Spark an idea?

Frosted Glass

Frosted glass finishes are most commonly used for increasing the opacity of clear glass windows for privacy or lighting purposed. Frosted glass finishes can also be used to update your mirrored closet doors and bring them up-to-date with current style trends. Frosted glass kits or frosted glass finishes can be purchased at most hardware or craft stores. For a modern or contemporary look, create geometric designs with frosted glass; a sequence of squares that covers most of the mirror's surface will tone down the mirror's presence while a series of circles arranged like floating bubbles will create a striking focal point in the room. Another option is to use frosted glass paint or etching materials to create elaborate floral or spiral designs around the frame or in the corners of the mirror. The mirror will instantly be transformed into a faux-framed piece of art.

Decals

Wall decals are emerging as an increasingly popular and impermanent alternative to outdated wallpaper. The same wall decals can be applied to mirrored closet doors to create a modern appearance or tie in the mirrors to the rest of the design scheme. Though most wall decals can be applied to mirrored surfaces, the decals may not be easy to remove. Instead, opt for decals specifically designed for mirrors to ensure easy removal and reuse. Solid decals in black create a bold contemporary design while colored decals create a bright, airy feel. Some decals are available in semitransparent varieties which do not interfere with the mirror's reflective ability. Consider simple designs like flowers or astrological pieces or more dynamic and bold options like dragons or dinosaurs for a playful feel.

Mosaic

A mosaic is a timeless design element that evokes the sense of the Mediterranean or Old World. Though turning the entire mirror into a mosaic may render the doors unusable, a mosaic frame around the mirror creates an updated feature that adds color and interest to the room. Purchase ceramic mosaic tiles, tile cement and grout for a craft or hardware store. It is easier to apply the tiles if you remove the doors from the wall first. Create a design mock-up before securing the tiles to the mirror; some cement instructions may tell you to rough up the surface with light sandpaper. Arrange the tiles around the frame of the mirror in the desired design and, once dry, fill the spaces between tiles with grout to ensure proper adherence. Another option is to purchase glass stones or beads in a variety of jewel tones to create a more romantic and elegant mirror frame.

Fabric Panels

One of the simplest fixes for a mirrored closet door is to cover the doors with fabric panels. Purchase a wide, decorative curtain rod and secure it to the frame about the mirrors. Hang heavy fabric in a complementary color from the rod to cover the mirror. Fabric panels maintain the function of the mirror but hide the mirror from general viewing. Select a fabric that matches the curtain in the room, or create a contrast by choosing a contemporary color or pattern that turns the space into a visual focal point of the room.
