Attach Shoji Panels To Walls To Make Swinging Doors

Use hinges to turn your shoji panel into a door.

Shoji screens originated in Japan and consist of three panels. Most shoji screens have a wood frame with an interior section of translucent material made from vinyl coated fiberglass. While the traditional use of shoji screens is to provide a foldable, portable barrier, you can use the individual panels to create swinging doors. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Detach the shoji panels from one another by unscrewing the hinges on one side. Leave the hinges attached to the individual panels for use in the door installation. Keep the screws from the detached areas for reuse.

2. Measure the area where you plan to install the shoji panel swinging door. Determine if the space is wide enough to use two panels or if you'll need to stick to one.

3. Measure the shoji screen and make note of the specific heights of the screw holes on the hinges.

4. Mark the height along the wall with a pencil where you want the bottom of your shoji screen door to fall. Repeat on the other side of the wall if using two panels.

5. Measure upward from the starting height mark and mark the locations of the screw holes from the hinges.

6. Drill pilot holes at the location of the hole markings using a drill bit appropriate for the size of the screws from the shoji panels.

7. Hold the shoji panel in place while the hinges are screwed into place at the location of the pilot holes. This attaches the panel to the wall creating a door which swings on the original hinges of the shoji screen. Repeat the process for the other side if creating a two-panel door.
