A pedestal sink and small toilet can help make valuable use of limited bathroom space.
Not too many homeowners complain about having a bathroom that is too big. You are far more likely to complain about a lack of space in the bathroom, especially if it's the only one in the house. Redecorating your small bathroom should focus on doing the most you can with the space you have. Several tricks of the trade can help you do just that. Does this Spark an idea?
Vertical Decor
A very small bathroom can be redecorated to provide more space by thinking vertically. A long, vertical mirror can replace a bulky medicine cabinet that is taking up valuable space. Redecorate with a pedestal sink that takes up less room than a standard built-in unit.
Colorful Flooring
One way to create the illusion of greater space is to change your flooring. Install a brightly colored rubber floor or vividly decorated ceramic tile. Intense colors have the psychological effect of enlarging a room, so don't be afraid to get a little wild with the color of your new flooring.
Use Mirrors
Do away with the medicine cabinet and that small affixed mirror and use the resulting wall space to create illusions via a larger mirror. A mirror that takes up a good chunk of the wall is only reflecting what limited space you've got, but the effect can expand the size of that space much more than your old medicine cabinet mirror could ever accomplish.
Get Rid of the Tub
One very effective way to increase space inside a cramped bathroom is to do away with a tub in a household where nobody ever takes a bath. An expansion of the shower stall can actually create the illusion of a more sizable bathroom overall.
Corner Tub Unit
If you enjoy your baths and don't want to do away with your tub, consider taking out the wall unit and installing a corner unit. If your small bathroom is letting the corner space go to waste, this can result in a much more efficient use of your limited space.
Customized Counter Area
Counter room inside a small bathroom is always at a premium, but you can do something about that by installing a bathroom counter that offers more opportunities for using the space you've got. Equip the area with tilt-out drawers and construct the counter area with a custom design that projects outward and inward alternately. The inward curvature of the counter should allow you to get closer to the sink and mirror. The outward curvature can be used for cabinet space.
Reduce Storage Space
Add more space by taking out storage areas inside your small bathroom. Draft a hallway closet into service as the storage area for used towels and dirty laundry. Get a little more room by recessing your medicine cabinet into the wall so that it runs flush with the wall. Tear open the wall that separates your bathroom from a neighboring closet and utilize that closet space as part of your bathroom design.
