Use storage furniture. Add a closet by bringing a piece such as a freestanding cabinet, an armoire or a wardrobe into the attic room. Look for models with drawers, hanging bars, shelves and racks for keeping items such as your holiday decorations, winter apparel, sports gear and clothing organized. Add a linen closet to the attic room by placing a big, roomy trunk at the foot of the bed or under a window for storing bulky quilts and blankets.
2. Freestanding shelf racks are a good temporary solution.
Create a makeshift storage area. Add a closet by bringing in shelf racks or clothes racks. Find them inexpensively priced at stores. Made of wood, metal or plastic, they are sturdy and durable. Place them wherever you want your improvised attic closet. Hide it from sight with a folding screen or hanging curtain. This is a solution if you need extra storage only temporarily.
3. Increase the storage capacity of items in the room. Add a closet by creating several square feet for storage. Move large furniture, such as couches, desks and wardrobes, a few inches away from walls, or place them on an angle in the corner. Store items behind them.
