Adjust A Mirrored Sliding Closet Door

A mirrored sliding door in your closet saves wall space and makes your bedroom seem larger. An aluminum track holds a pair of hangers for each door that enable the doors to slide open. These hangers sometimes loosen and require adjustment. The process is simple and requires very few tools. Adjusting a mirrored sliding door takes a bit more care than a plain door because you don't want to scratch or break the mirrors on the door. You must also allow for the extra weight of the mirrors as you make adjustments. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove any items in the way of the sliding closet door. Vacuum or sweep the area, taking care to clean out the plastic floor guide on the floor. If there is something in the brace, it can affect the way the mirrored sliding door operates.

2. Slide the mirrored doors to one side. Tighten the screws that hold the rail in place to the closet header. If they are loose, they can interfere with the operation of the door. Slide the doors to the other side of the opening and tighten the screws in that side of the rail.

3. Close the doors to see if they are plumb, or straight up and down. They should come all the way to the doorjamb on both sides. If they don't, use an adjustable wrench or screwdriver to raise or lower the door's adjustment mechanism. These devices are located in the hangers that suspend the door from the rails. Only turn the device one-quarter turn at a time until the door hangs properly.

4. Remove the floor guide, using a screwdriver. Pull the door on the front track toward you and lift it off its track. You may need to release a mechanism to free it. Set the door on a pair of sawhorses. Cut a small amount off the bottom of the door if it is sticking, using a circular saw. Remove the other door and trim it. Re-hang the doors and reinstall the floor guide.
