Put Up A Pegboard Organizer

Organize your workspace with an easy-to-install pegboard organizer.

Perforated hardboard, or pegboard as it is commonly known, is a composite material consisting of wood fibers and resin. It is coated with linseed oil and baked at a high temperature to harden the material. Evenly spaced holes are drilled into the board. Pegboard is a very popular material for organizing tools, hanging craft and kitchen supplies or anything you can imagine. The pegboard is not directly attached to the wall; a wooden frame is screwed to the wall and the pegboard is attached to the wooden frame. Installation is easy with a few basic tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Prepare Your Pegboard

1. Use the tape measure and measure the area on your wall where you want to install the pegboard. Use the stud finder to locate at least two studs in the wall to support the top and base boards of the wooden frame. With your pencil, mark the wall where the studs are located.

2. Measure and cut the pegboard according to your wall measurements.

3. Measure and cut the four 1-by-3-inch pine boards to create a frame around the perimeter of the back of the pegboard. The boards will serve as a stiff support backing for the pegboard. Do not attach the boards to the back of the pegboard.

4. Lightly sand and prime the pegboard and the pine boards with primer. Allow to dry, then paint the pegboard and wooden boards. Allow to completely dry.

Hang the Pegboard

5. Take the first wooden board and place it on the wall where you want the top of the pegboard located. Use the level and the pencil to mark a level line.

6. Locate your pencil markings of the two studs in the wall. Use the drill and the 2-inch drywall screws and screw the board to the wall, into the studs behind it.

7. Hold up the pegboard against the board to ensure that the placement is level, correct and at the height you want it. With your pencil, draw a line at the bottom of the pegboard for the placement of the bottom board.

8. Install the bottom board, using the pencil line as a guideline. Screw the board into the wall and into the studs behind it. Hold up the pegboard to check for correct and level placement.

9. Install the two remaining boards to the wall. If there is no wall stud at these locations, use anchor screws to secure the screws through drywall. Hold up the board in its place against the wall and mark its level placement with your pencil. Predrill the holes into the boards and through the drywall behind it. Remove the board from its place against the wall. Insert the anchors into the drywall. Return the board against the wall, using your pencil mark as a reference, and screw the board onto the wall. Repeat for the last board.

10. Hold up the pegboard to check for correct and level placement of the boards.

11. Screw the pegboard to the wooden boards with the drill and 1-inch wood screws. Drill screws about 18 inches apart to prevent the pegboard from warping over time.

12. Touch up the pegboard with paint. Allow to dry. Hang the pegboard hooks into the pegboard holes.
