Measure & Install Closet Bifold Doors

Installing bifold doors is an ideal weekend project.

Installing bifold doors is an easy improvement to make in any home, and it takes little time. Bifold doors are most often used as closet doors, and they add a touch of elegance to any room. If you have sliding closet doors common in many older homes, removing them and installing bifold doors is an upgrade many will appreciate, especially if you are planning to sell the house. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the length and width of the closet opening. When you purchase bifold doors, be sure to order a style that is one inch less than the actual width of your closet, and one to two inches shorter than the actual height of the closet opening.

2. Paint the bifold doors, if desired, before installation. Add the hardware to the doors, which includes the pivot plates and locking arms. Since each kit varies based on the style of the doors, your kit will feature a diagram so you know exactly where to place each piece of hardware.

3. Drill and install the metal track from the kit to the top of the closet opening with the supplied screws.

4. Screw the floor brackets into the floor directly under the tracking on the ceiling. Use a plumb bob string to help you align the top track with the bottom brackets. A plumb bob is a metal or brass bulb attached to a string that when hung from a vertical point, hangs directly down. It's a helpful tool to use instead of using a level.

5. Lift one bifold door, and place the pin on the top portion of the door in the track. Make sure the bottom pin on the portion of the door nearest the sidewall is installed in the floor bracket. Install the other bifold door in the same manner.

6. Go inside the closet, and attach the door alignment hardware six inches from the floor between the two folding doors. Then do the same to the other two folding doors.

7. Install the door handles on the folding doors.
