Closet Organization Tips

Messy Closet

Tackling a messy closet can be an overwhelming task, since closets tend be the storage area for anything that doesn't have a place. While your closet may be bursting at the seams, with some time, the right attitude and the right technique, your closet can once again become an organized area of your home without the aid of a professional organizer. Does this Spark an idea?

Purge

Before you attempt to organize your closet, you need to take everything out. Then make three piles: one for items that you are keeping, one for items that you can give away and one for trash. Seriously purge what you have, especially if your closet was overstuffed to begin with. Try on clothing and only plan to hang up what fits. Other clothing should be given away. However, items that are only one size difference can be put into storage, if desired. In the end, you have what you need, have a closet that is organized and easy to maintain, and a little room for new items.

Containers

First of all, try out all your containers in the closet before you take off the labels and tags. This way, if they don't quite fit they way you meant, you can take them back and try again. Of course, you should measure first, but mistakes can happen. Place smaller containers along the top shelf of your closet and larger ones on the bottom. In fact, if you have room, use containers with drawers to line the bottom of your closet for extra storage.

Use clear plastic containers so you can see what is in each one. Put like items in one container. You will not be able to see everything, so assign a number to each clear bin. Then on a sheet of paper, keep a list of exactly what is in the container. Keep the paper in a safe place near your closet, like your sock drawer.

Organize

Again, only hang up clothes that currently fit you. Also, if your closet is small, only hang up items for the current season, and store away the others. You can buy bins that fit under your bed. If you have items that are for special occasions, store in a spare closet, perhaps in a spare bedroom or garment box in the attic. Then, hang the clothes you are keeping in your closet. Store like items together and sort by color. Also, use like hangers, which will give a more uniform look to your closet.

Shoes can go on the closet door with a store-purchased shoe organizer. Like the clothes, be sure the shoes you are keeping in your closet are the ones you are currently wearing. You can also put shoes on the floor on a shoe rack or on top of the containers mentioned in Section 2.
