Convert your walk-in closet to solve space issues.
A walk-in closet could provide extra space in a tight room situation. Many houses have several bedrooms with walk-in closets, and you may not need the extra storage as much as you need another room. Find the perfect use for your extra walk-in closet and solve the space and room issues that your family is struggling with. Does this Spark an idea?
Office
A walk-in closet is often the right size for an office. Generally, an office does not need much space, and you do not need to worry about the lack of windows. Take out the shelving, and install a desk and file cabinets to make the change. Install a new light fixture to brighten up the room. Paint light colors to make the small space seem larger.
Newborn Nursery
A newborn nursery will only work if the walk-in closet has a window. Most states have a regulation that requires all rooms for sleeping include a window. Check with your local building inspector's office to learn your state's regulations. The closet could hold a basinet, a changing table and clothing for the newborn. It is a temporary room, so don't use it once the baby is too big for a bassinet, but the nearby nursery may make the long nights easier to deal with. Depending on the size of the closet, add a glider or rocking chair.
Library
If you are an avid reader, remove the shelving and clothes rod to install custom bookshelves. Consider floor to ceiling bookshelves. If there is room, include a comfortable chair, a reading lamp and a small step stool to reach the books.
Music Practice Room
A music practice room will allow everyone a chance to practice their instruments privately. If the noise of the music is a problem, add extra installation to soundproof the noise from the rest of the house. However, just having the practice room away from the rest of the house might be enough. It is expensive to soundproof a room the same way you would for a recording studio, so simply add enough to isolate the music from the rest of the house.
Craft Room
A craft room would fit well into a walk-in closet. This allows you to leave your crafts out to dry or leave the supplies out for a project in process. Install a lock on the door to keep out young children. If you are working with chemicals, ventilate the room with a fan and an open door. Add shelves and drawers to one wall of the closet to hold your supplies and a long table to the other side of the closet with a chair. Add a brighter light or a few table lamps as well.
