What is Needed
To build a walk-in closet, you need plenty of 2x4 boards, drywall and all the right tools, like a hammer, drill, circular saw and anchor bolts. You may also need a sledge hammer to take down walls, and flooring materials.
Building the Closet Space
Constructing the closet space involves erecting walls and taking down doors. To expand a normal closet, you will probably take down one of the walls or knock out the back wall to expand the closet area. In some cases, you may simply take out the two shorter walls (next to the existing doors) and expand them straight forward to increase the space. In a new home, simply let the room space dictate where you place any new closet walls.
Adding Shelves
Most walk-in closets have a large number of shelves and drawers to help keep the space organized. Since the idea is to make life easier and add storage, these shelves are arranged to provide simple access to everything, including clothes and shoes, as well as sports equipment, laundry accessories and other things.
Improving and Using the Space
A good idea when building a walk-in closet is to make use of space. Do this by building additional storage or by including other areas that house a washer and dryer, ironing area and clothes mirror. This keeps these things out of sight and opens up new storage space in what was once your laundry area. You can also store coats and winter clothes in a walk-in and move more stuff into the attic and closets.
The Building
Building a walk-in is a chore for someone who has building and framing experience. You need to know hang wall frames and install, tape and paint drywall. It's a good job for a sub-contractor or a friend who knows use tools and build walls.
