Diy Organization Ideas

Do-it-yourself home organization uses space more effectively.

No matter what room you are working on, organizing your home can be a difficult task. Coming up with creative organization and storage solutions allow you to reduce clutter and maximize the space in any room. Whether you want to organize your kitchen pantry, garage or teenager's closet, there are a number of items you can purchase or repurpose to utilize extra space and get every room in your home organized. Does this Spark an idea?

Kitchen Organization

When organizing your kitchen, pay special attention to your pantry, refrigerator and cabinets. Take inventory of all the food you have in your kitchen. Throw away all spoiled and expired foods. Fill a box with all canned goods and nonperishable foods that are still good but you have no use for and donate the box of food to someone in need.

Pour open boxes of cereal and bags of sugar and flour into large jars or plastic containers. Besides keeping the products organized, doing this keeps the cereal fresh longer and prevents the sugar and flour from spilling or becoming hard. Also, hang a small cork board in your kitchen to keep shopping lists and important recipes organized and within reach.

Organizing a Child's Room

With an abundance of toys, clothes and books scattered around, a child's bedroom is often one of the most disorganized and cluttered rooms in a home. Take inventory of your child's room and separate his things into four labeled boxes: keep, donate, storage and trash. Place all damaged toys, books and clothing into the trash box to throw away.

Things he has not used in 12 months should be placed in the donate box. Place out-of-season clothing and other items in the storage box to be stored in his closet or in your garage. As for the keep box, place his books on a bookshelf, his clothing on hangers or in dressers and his toys in plastic storage totes or cubbies.

Closet Organization

Although many people are unsatisfied with the size of their bedroom closet, adding one or two do-it-yourself organization solutions can increase your space considerably. Mount a pegboard on the inside of the closet door to hang belts, scarves and small handbags. Hang heavy or large handbags on hooks or wooden hangers. Clothing, sweaters and jackets should be hung on proper hangers to maximize space and reduce clutter.

The number of shoes you own and your available space determines how you should organize the shoes in your closet. Some options include a slanted platform shoe rack placed at the bottom of your closet, a hanging shoe shelf hung from a closet bar, an over-the-door shoe rack hung on the inside of the closet door or shoe boxes stacked on your closet shelf.

Garage Organization

Whether small or large, garages often become the dumping ground for everything you are not currently using in your home. Take inventory of your garage and throw away everything that is broken or unusable. Things that are in good condition but not being used should be placed in boxes to donate or sell. Once you have determined what you want to keep, divide the garage into different zones and designate a purpose to each area. Examples of zones include seasonal clothing, yard and holiday decorations.

Use old jars, bottles, baby wipes containers and coffee cans to organize nails, screws, tools and other items. Store seasonal clothing and decorations in large, labeled storage totes and boxes. Mount pegboards or shelving systems to garage walls to keep bikes, rakes, brooms and other items organized.
