Build Closet Shoe Rack Designs

A shoe rack keeps shoes tidy in your closet, not cluttering the floor.

Rather than pile shoes on the floor of your closet or stack cardboard shoe boxes precariously, build a shoe rack to simplify your storage. Organize your shoes in a tidy manner and improve the appearance of your closet. Expect this project to take between an hour if you are an experienced woodworker and two hours if you are less experienced. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width along the back wall of your closet, or the width of a side wall if your closet is more than 2 feet in depth. Determine how wide you want the shoe rack to be: to fill the full width of the wall or just to take up a portion of the space.

2. Cut two height boards to 3 feet long to act as the sides of your rack.

3. Cut three boards to the shoe rack's width, as determined in Step 1, minus 2 inches. These boards will be the rack's shelves.

4. Lay the two height boards on a flat surface so they run parallel to each other on their 1-inch width. Space the boards as far apart as your shelf boards are long. Place one shelf board between the side boards and slide it up to rest between the boards at the top. Insert three evenly spaced screws through each side board and into the ends of the top shelf board.

5. Place a second shelf board between the side boards and position it to come 11 inches below the bottom of the top board. Insert screws to secure the board. Place each subsequent board 11 inches below the previous one until all of the shelves are attached.

6. Stand the shoe rack upright with the open bottom end facing the ground. Place the shoe rack into your closet and fill each shelf with pairs of shoes placed side by side, or leave the shoes in boxes and set the boxes on the shelves.
