Turn your old closet into a shoe zoo.
When you have plenty of shoes, you need to have plenty of shoe storage. A double wall closet provides an effective storage and display space for your shoes as long as you have the right hardware installed. Use narrow lengths of board to hold your shoes to the wall. This requires a small amount of woodworking knowledge, but the building process itself is very straightforward. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Remove everything from the closet.
2. Measure from one end of the back of the closet wall to the other using a measuring tape.
3. Cut one length of 1/2-by-2-inch board and one length of 1/2-by-4-inch board according to the measurements you found in Step 2 using a saw.
4. Sand both lengths of board using 100-grit sandpaper.
5. Wipe off any sawdust using tack cloth.
6. Paint both lengths of board using paint and a paintbrush.
7. Attach L brackets to the edge of each board using screws and an electric drill. Install an L bracket about every foot or 1.5 feet.
8. Attach the wider shelf to the wall where you want the shoes to rest by screwing the other half of the L-brackets to the wall.
9. Attach the narrower shelf to the wall 2 inches above the wider shelf. The shoes are held by inserting them toe-first into the 2-inch gap between the shelves and allowing them to hang freely.
10. Repeat this process for successive rows of shoes down the back of the closet wall.
