Turn part of a large basement into a bedroom.
You need another bedroom. Perhaps two siblings who shared a room now each need their own space, which will mean you no longer have a guest bedroom. Perhaps a younger brother needs a place for a couple of weeks while looking for an apartment, or a great-aunt is coming to stay with you. However, you don't have any spare rooms, just a large basement. No problem. Use a few creative techniques to turn it part of it into a bedroom. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Use a couple of armoires as a room divider.
Separate the bedroom from the rest of the basement. Do some space planning first to ensure the bedroom is put in the best possible location. You want it out of the way, so that people don't have to walk through it to get to a laundry room or garage. If there is a closet in the basement, consider positioning the bedroom so that it includes the closet, which will mean you won't have to bring in wardrobes or armoires for storage. Once you've decided on location, bring in room dividers. These are a much less expensive and less permanent solution than having walls built. Options include anging curtains, moveable walls, folding screens or a wall of furniture such as bookshelves or a large entertainment center.
2. Use furniture that is appropriately sized.
Bring in furniture, such as nightstands, a dresser and a bed. If there's only one small closet, or no closet space at all, buy a bed with headboard storage and drawers underneath, and place a trunk at the foot of the bed and shelves on the walls. What additional furniture can be brought in will be dictated by how much space is available. An armchair and accent table could create a comfy reading nook, a small desk and chair or an office area. Maybe a TV would make the occupant feel more comfortable. Carefully consider furniture size to keep from overcrowding the bedroom space.
3. Incorporate greenery with some potted plants.
Add some finishing touches. A few homey affects can take any room from converted space to cozy bedroom. Hanging full-length curtains over small basement windows gives the illusion of full-sized windows. If there is no window, hang up some faux windows. Add a potted plant. Place framed posters or pictures on the walls. Make good use of other fabrics, such as beautiful bedding, accent pillows and rugs and lampshades.
