Storage Space Ideas

This is an example of a piece of furniture that's attractive and has storage possibilities.

No matter where you live, having the adequate amount of storage to meet your needs is important. Adequate storage prevents your house from feeling cramped and cluttered and prevents you from having to pay for extra storage at an outside location or from throwing precious items away. There are methods that you can employ to make the most of your storage capabilities. Does this Spark an idea?

Multifunctional Furniture

Fill your house with furniture that can do double duty. For example, some coffee tables and even couches come outfitted with drawers for keeping magazines, newspapers, junk mail and other items out of sight. Chests and trunks are also perfect in this regard, as you can fill them with stuff and then use them as a side bench or coffee table. Find a skinny armoire for smaller rooms, and fill that with old photo albums, electronics, cords, linens, discs, books, etc. A sofa bed is a suitable way to eliminate the need for a guest room or to enable a home office to also double as a guest room.

Under the Stairs

Take advantage of the awkward space behind and under the stairs in your house as a place to store old appliances, sheets, towels, camping equipment, etc. You can build drawers in this area to make access easy, or wall off this entire area and make it into a large walk-in closet. Alternatively, this space is a good area to put up bookshelves and make into a tiny library.

Make the Most of What You Have

There are always other storage options for even the tiniest apartment. You can almost double the size of your closet by simply adding another rod. You can position one rod in the closet high up for long clothing, such as long dresses, and another rod for items that are short in length, such as shirts, jackets, etc. Use your wall space: You can take pots and pans out of cabinets and hang them on hooks from the wall, freeing up cabinet space. You can always install shelves with brightly colored boxes for odds and ends. Remember to store things that you use most often near the places where you use them; for example, store DVDs near the television and toilet paper in the bathroom.
