Make A Secret Door To A Room Or Closet

Bookshelf Door

Homes that were built in the 1700-1800's were often built with hidden passageways or bookshelves that moved to reveal spaces behind them. Modern designers can do the same thing.

Hiding or concealing a space in your home can be an esthetic addition, such as for an older home where the bathroom is right off the kitchen. You may wish to conceal a door into a private study, craft or workroom. Perhaps an open passageway from one part of a house to another needs to be addressed to make it look as if it is a solid wall.

There are many reasons someone might want to conceal a doorway and present the space as being a closed space with a bookshelf, pantry or hutch-style cabinet. No one in the room would know that the space is actually a totally usable doorway. They would assume it was what it looks like - a bookshelf filled with books and

knickknacks, or if it is in the kitchen it could be a pantry, to hold dishes, food, or other items.

One of the nice things about having a concealed doorway that is functional is that you enhance the appearance of the room, as the prior door no longer is there, and the addition of shelves or hutch provides extra and attractive storage and display space.

There are companies that sell pre-hung, solid wood doors that are designed to look like anything BUT a door, and would conceal the fact that a space was on the other side.

There are also plans you can purchase which instruct a handy person on building and installing one themselves. If you order one from a company, it will be pre-hung, and will fit the doorway you have provided dimensions for. The companies can provide you with more information regarding openers and which way it will open, etc. Price for a solid wood pre-hung door starts at around $1,100.
