Building a cabinet need not be a complex process.
Building a cabinet is one of the most simple DIY tasks. A cabinet is based on the idea of an open box, which can be used to store a variety of items. The cabinet that is described here is a simple wooden box cabinet, which can be combined with cabinets of other sizes to make a stylish and modern effect. You will not need any technical knowledge to build this cabinet, and you will soon have a pleasing and useful set of cabinets. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Decide what size you would like your cabinet to be. The most modern type of cabinet consists of three or more wall-mounted open boxes of different sizes. Plan what you intend to keep in the boxes as a start point. Write what dimensions you will need before cutting the wood. Calculate the total amount of wood you will need by adding the total areas of each side of the cabinet. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) works well for cabinets as it is easy to craft. However, some may prefer hardwoods such as cherry or oak for their aesthetic values.
2. Mark the wood with the pencil, and cut out the sections using the saw. Once you have the sections, you can begin to use the wood glue to attach them together by generously applying wood glue to the edges of the sides to be joined. Hold them together while the glue dries using a wood clamp. Use a level to ensure that the joins are straight and therefore make perfect right-angles. Make an open-faced box, either with or without a lid. Be generous with the glue.
3. Sand the boxes when the glue has fully dried, which may take two to three hours. Sand off all excess glue, and gently rub the rest of the wood to sand it down. If you are varnishing or staining the wood you can be more vigorous with the wood, although if you are going for a modern, minimalist cabinet, a gentle sanding will be enough.
4. Mount the cabinet to the wall using a drill and screws. Use a level to mount the cabinet and ensure it is hanging straight. Before you begin to screw, mark with the pencil where you wish the cabinet to be. This will help keep you straight as you drill the screw in. Use at least two screws to attach the cabinet to the wall, and more if it will be used to hold large or bulky items.
