Create A Store Layout

Arrange smaller and cheaper items closer to the checkout for impulse buys.

Whether you are starting from scratch or just tinkering with the current store setup, there are plenty of things to consider when creating a layout. Things such as arranging the shelf items and establishing a shop image are vital to creating an effective and high-selling store.

Instructions

1. Offer as many buying opportunities as possible to customers as they walk around the store. Place the most popular items at the back of the store so customers must pass through -- and may shop at -- other sections first. Set up smaller, cheaper impulse buys at the cash register.

2. Make an easy-to-navigate store layout by sectioning the store into sensible areas and then putting clear signs on each section. Make the products in each section easily accessible by stacking them only as high as you can reach, and by always keeping them within arm's reach of the customer.

3. Allow a sufficient amount of space for customers to navigate the store. Customers who find themselves blocked or trapped in an overcrowded store may feel uncomfortable and be more likely to leave. Create a large amount of space at the store entrance -- where the most traffic will be -- and by giving each area more than one way in and out.

4. Create an individualized layout to help establish and reinforce your store's image. Store layouts should echo the company's message or key product.
