Remove Closet Doors For New Space

Remove Closet Doors for New Space

Some architects and national home builders install regular-size doors on closets not considering the loss of space experienced in and around the closet by the homeowner. Space that must be left around the door to accommodate opening and closing is often wasted. This situation is easily modified if more space is desired. Usually, the simple removal of the closet door from the door frame can result in gained space within the closet and outside around the closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Examine the screws on the hinges of the closet door. Determine if you need a Phillips or a flat head screwdriver.

2. Use the screwdriver to remove the screws from the BOTTOM door hinge first. Only unscrew the screws on the door frame. It's not necessary to remove the hinges from the closet door. Leaving the hinges on the closet door will eliminate the accidental misplacing of the hinges in the event of future re-installation of the closet door. It is not necessary to remove the pins from the closet door hinges. Most doors have loose pin hinges where half of the hinge is attached to the door and the other half of the hinge is attached to the door frame. You are leaving the door hinges attached to the closet door that you are removing.

3. Place the screws into a plastic, zipper bag.

4. Use the craft blade to slide around the crack between the metal hinge and the closet door if paint has coated the hinge, forming a seal. Pull the hinge away from the door frame.

5. Use the screwdriver to unscrew the screws in the top door hinge. Use care as the closet door may swing downward or forward as you remove each screw. You may need to lean against the closet door with the door against the wall, to hold the closet door in place so it does not swing dangerously.

6. Lift the closet door to the floor and lean the closet door against the wall.

7. Tape the baggy of screws to the backside of the closet door with masking tape so you will be able to easily locate the screws in the event that you want to re-install the closet door in the door frame. Place the closet door into a garage or a storage place.
