Arrange A Washer & Dryer In A Laundry Closet

Arrange your washer and dryer to maximize space and convenience.

An in-home washer and dryer can save you lots of time on laundry day, but these appliances also can take up a lot of space. If your home has a laundry room, you probably have adequate space to house your appliances. But if you have a much smaller laundry closet, you'll need to determine how best to arrange the washer and dryer to ensure ease of use and to maximize use of the small space. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width, length and height dimensions of the laundry closet with a tape measure. Then measure the width, length and height measurements for the washer and the dryer. Ideally, measurements should be taken prior to purchasing the washer and dryer to ensure they will fit into the closet.

2. Add the height of both the washer and dryer together and compare it to the height of the laundry closet to see if you can stack the washer and dryer on top of each other. Stacking the appliances saves space and allows for the addition of a drying rack or additional storage cabinets. To stack appliances, purchase washer/dryer stacking hardware from a home improvement store and attach to the appliances according to the manufacturer's instructions. The dryer must be placed on top of the washer since it is lighter. If the total height of the appliances is taller than the height of the closet, they must be arranged side-by-side.

3. Decide which appliance will be located on the right side and which will be located on the left. The easiest way to decide is to examine the back wall of the laundry closet and look for the dryer vent. The vent is a round opening that contains a silver cylinder projecting from it. It is usually located on one side of the wall, while the water faucets for the washing machine are located on the other side of the wall. Install the dryer on the side of the wall nearest the vent and install the washer on the side nearest the water faucets.
