Frame Out A Corner Closet

A corner closet is easy to build.

A corner closet is one of the easiest closets to add to your home, since it uses two existing walls as part of the design. An additional closet will provide more storage space for your home, and can increase a home's value. It can also turn a large office or den into a space that would work as a bedroom. This design is for a fully finished room. Building a closet is not a difficult project and most homeowner's should be able to tackle it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the areas you want your closet to cover. Most closets are at least 24 inches deep. The walls of the closet will need to attach to already existing studs, so this may slightly affect the size of your closet. Using the stud finder find the studs you will attach the closet to and mark them. Measure the height of the ceiling from the base of the floor.

2. Cut the 2-by-4s. You will need two 2-by-4s that run the length of your closet and two 2-by-4s that are the depth of your closet. These will be the top and bottom of each framed wall. Cut the remaining 2-by-4s 4 inches shorter than the height of the ceiling. Cut a 2-by-4 that is the length of the doorframe, and shorter pieces that will connect the top of the doorframe with the top of the wall frame.

3. Build the frames by nailing the 2-by-4s together. The top and bottom of the frame will lay with the 4-inch side flush to the ceiling and the wall. Nail the other 2-by-4s into place 18 inches apart from each other with one at each end of the frame.

4. Create a space for the closet door by measuring the distance between the top of the doorframe and the ceiling, and then subtract 4 inches to come up with the correct height for those studs. Nail the top of the doorframe into place. You will need a 2-by-4 attached to either side of the doorframe to nail it into place as well. You will need to determine the placement of the door as you build the frame.

5. Install the frames by nailing them into place. You will need to nail the bottom of the frame into place on either side of each stud. Nail it into the ceiling on either side of each stud. Nail it into the stud on the wall every 18 inches up and down. You will nail through the existing drywall on your walls into the stud behind it.

6. Remove the bottom of the doorframe by cutting it out with a handsaw.

7. Hang the drywall for the closet walls using screws. Then tape the drywall and apply the drywall compound to the seams and screw holes. Allow the compound to dry, then sand and paint the walls to the closet.

8. Place the door by nailing it into the frame you created in the wall. The nails should be 18 inches apart and in each corner of the doorframe.
