Decorate A China Closet

China can be a part of the room decor.

China closets display treasured items and keep dishes and glassware organized, but they are also essential to a room's decor. If you think in terms of traditional china closets, you might be pleasantly surprised to learn that china closets are now available in styles ranging from modern and country to oriental designs. Whichever style is right for your home, a china cabinet can be arranged and decorated to better accentuate the beautiful china or other fine keepsakes it stores. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Make a small cabinet appear larger by adding craft mirrors to the back wall. Mirrors will reflect lighting as well as provide a back view of ornamental vases or other objects that do not have a specific back or front design. Self-sticking mirrors are available in numerous sizes, with or without beveled edges. They also come in several decorative shapes.

2. Use self-sticking contact paper to add color or a design to your china closet and complement the room decor. Choose a light color or uncomplicated design as the backdrop. You do not want to distract from the fine objects your china cabinet displays.

3. When arranging the contents of your china cabinet, place your most decorative pieces at eye level, where they can draw the most attention. Use a plate stand to hold an especially treasured ornate plate or family heirloom. Make sure to give the shelf visual balance by using a second plate stand or decorative piece that is of equal size.

4. Stack plates on a lower shelf for easy access and to avoid the strain of lifting. Center the stack of plates in the center and arrange cups and saucers around the stack. If the shelf is too small to comfortably fit cups and saucers, place these items on their own shelf.

5. Arrange a separate shelf for cups, saucers and bowls if necessary. Carefully place two cup and saucer settings in the center of the shelf. Place the remaining cups, saucers and bowls in individual stacks. Arrange the stacks to make the shelf look balanced.

6. Use your china closet's top shelf for large items that might not be used frequently. A decorative serving bowl that can be removed easily but is also large enough to be noticed is a good choice.

7. Reserve a shelf so you can place all your crystal or other special stemware together. Place linens and silverware inside drawers. Candles used for special occasions should also be placed safely away in drawers.
