Build A Shelving System

Shelving systems can be adapted to wherever you need them.

A shelving system can fit a variety of storage and display needs. Personal taste goes into building your own shelving system, so measure carefully and include adjustable shelf track to make your shelving system exactly what you need. Adjustable shelf track enables you to move things around and change the system from time to time. The best part is that it's painless to install. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Set the 15-by-84-inch-long pieces of 3/4-inch plywood on a worktable. These are the side pieces of your shelving unit. Measure from one end and make marks at 3/4 inch, 29 1/4 inches, 30 inches, 48 inches, 48 3/4 inches and 83 1/4 inches. Put the framing square on the marks and draw lines across the 15-inch width of the plywood.

2. Cut four adjustable shelf tracks 16 inches long and four tracks 22 inches long, using a hacksaw. Pay attention to the holes in the tracks while cutting. They must match in order to install shelves on them. If they have numbers on them, the large numbers go to the top of the tracks.

3. Make marks 1 inch from the front and back edges of the side pieces. Place the 16-inch adjustable shelf tracks on the marks, keeping them 12 inches from the bottom of the side pieces. Secure them to the side pieces with the supplied tacks.

4. Measure up from the 48 3/4-inch marks, making marks at 12 inches. Put the bottom of the 22-inch adjustable tracks on those marks. Align them with the 1-inch marks made from the front and back edges. Secure them with the tacks.

5. Apply glue to the 15-inch edges of the four pieces of 28 1/2-by-15-inch plywood. Place one piece at the top, one at the bottom and the others between the lines on the shelving unit side pieces. Secure them to the side pieces with 8-penny finish nails. Clean up the excess glue with a damp cloth.

6. Run a bead of glue in the center of the edges of the side pieces and shelves. Set the piece of 1/2-inch plywood on it. Secure the plywood to the shelving system with 4-penny box nails. Clean up the excess glue with a damp cloth.

7. Determine the space between the adjustable tracks and subtract 1/8 inch. Cut as many shelves as desired to this length from 3/4-inch plywood.
