Contemporary Shelving Ideas

Contemporary design styles focus primarily on white, with bright colors thrown in for accents to make the room look more hip and stylish. It's closely related to the modern style and uses unusual or unexpected shapes. For example, you may find a classic, long couch next to a chair shaped like an egg. Those creating a contemporary space may choose floating shelves to display books and other items or use more modern contemporary shelving ideas. Does this Spark an idea?

Modular Shelves

Modular design essentially takes smaller components to make a larger item. In terms of bookshelves, it uses smaller shelves to create one larger bookshelf. Home improvement and big box stores sell modular pieces in shades of white, black and neutral woods that fit most budgets. The shelves include cube shelves, rectangular shelves and square shelves. The shelves all fit together and work with other optional pieces, including drawers and cabinets. You purchase the pieces you need and fit the shelves together yourself, to customize the shape and size of your shelf.

Companies such as Odersoding make shelves that look like modular shelves, allowing you to adjust or pull out the shelves, but are actually made of a solid piece of wood.

3-D Shelves

Three-dimensional shelves are a popular choice for contemporary spaces because the wall shelves add color and contrast to the walls. The shelves come in different styles, including those shaped like specific letters, numbers, shapes and even elements from nature, like trees. The shelves hold a small number of books, magazines or items. Because of the shape, some designers place minimal items on the shelf and instead use it as a form of artwork on the wall.

Designers also make some unusual designs, such as the "cave pet bookcase" from designer Sakura Adachi, which has a pet house built into the shelf, or shelves that incorporate seating on top.

Slanted Shelves

Slanted shelves are designed to look as if the piece might topple over at any point, but they are actually weighted down carefully.

In the past, Smansk made a series of bookshelves known as skew shelves. Each piece was slanted slightly, but the pieces also fit together to make a solid bookshelf with alternated slanting shelves. Designers today are making similar shelves that hang on the wall. The designers add small pieces to the end of the shelves, to keep your items from sliding or falling off the shelf.
