Close The Ends Of A Wire Closet Shelving Rack

Wire closet shelving is an economical way to organize your closet. Wire shelving is lightweight, but sturdy, and you can install it yourself. Although wire racks come in standard sizes, closets do not. Because of this, you will probably have to cut the wire shelving to make the shelves fit your closet. When you cut the wires, sharp ends will be left on the shelves that can snag your clothing or cut you. There is a simple solution to close the exposed sharp ends: install endcaps made for this purpose. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Buy enough vinyl or plastic endcaps for each cut wire of the shelving rack. Get the appropriate size endcap for the gauge of wire of your shelving. If possible, buy the endcaps from the same manufacturer that made the shelving rack. Hardware stores and home improvement centers usually carry endcaps and other wire rack supplies.

2. Cut the wires of the shelving rack with wire cutters or a hacksaw, so the cut ends are nearest the closet wall, if possible. Ideally, you want the cut ends to rest in the bracket on the wall. If this is not possible, cut enough off the wires to allow room for the endcaps between the rack wire and the next shelf, closet door or other structure.

3. Place an endcap over each cut end of the shelving rack. If there is a burr from cutting, file it lightly with a metal file. Push each endcap onto each wire, so the end of the wire fills the entire hole in the endcap. Now your wire shelving rack is ready to install in the closet.
