Cut Closetmaid Shelving

Measure shelving twice before cutting to ensure a precise and correct fit.

Shelving systems in closets, pantries and garages maximize storage space. The ClosetMaid Corp. manufactures metal-grate shelving systems constructed of welded metal rods coated in a rugged rubber for durability. These are available in several colors to coordinate with different decors. To install ClosetMaid shelving, you'll need to cut the rods that run lengthwise across the shelf using either bolt cutters or a saw equipped with a metal cutting blade. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the space between the ClosetMaid wall brackets that are to secure the shelving in place.

2. Turn the Closetmaid shelf upside down to expose the rods that run lengthwise across the back of the shelf. Stretch the tape measure over the shelf to determine its current length.

3. Determine if there is enough space for the thick rods to run past the shelf's top surface wiring, which runs perpendicular to the horizontal rods, by 1/2 to 1 inch and still fit in the space you measured in Step 1. This extra space allows you to place rubber end caps over the cut rods and situate the shelving properly inside the closet brackets.

4. Mark the thick rods with a permanent marker to indicate where to make cuts.

5. Position the bolt cutter's blades over one of the shelf's thick rods. Squeeze the bolt cutter's handle to cut the rod, making sure to leave a 1/2 to 1 inch overhang to allow for the rubber end caps.

6. Cut each thick rod on the shelf to the same length. Slip rubber caps over each cut rod if space allows and install the shelf on the supporting closet brackets.
