Standard Closet Measurements

Closets come in many sizes and shapes.

Closets are used for storing clothing, coats and items you use every once in awhile. Attached to a bedroom or hallway, there is no real standard size for a closet. It's as large or as small as you want and depends mainly on your needs along with the home or apartment size. There are some parts of the closet with standardized sizes, however. Does this Spark an idea?

Closet Doors

Closet doors come in standard sizes starting as small as 24 inches and moving up in size by 2 to 36 inches or more. Usually, home improvement centers stock closet doors in each of these sizes with the most common being 34-, 32- and 28-inch doors. Sliding closet doors may be as large as 6-feet long and often come in panels that are 36 inches wide each. Bifold doors also tend to come in sizes ranging from 28 up to 48 inches. The height of the closet doors is typically 80 inches, which is the standard size for interior doors.

Clothing Rods

The clothing rod in the closet is usually as long as the closet is wide. Most closets offer at least 6 feet of width, so the standard clothing rod is this long as well. In modular closets where shelving is added alongside the clothing rod, it may be as short as 3 feet. When double-stacked closet rods are present, they typically are half as long as the closet width or as suitable to the storage needs of the closet owner. Generally speaking, the closet rod runs the width of your closet, and about 4 feet worth of hanging space is required for a single person. Rods hang at either 45 inches high or 60 to 65 inches high for long garments and dresses.

Bedroom Closet Width and Depth

Closets come in all shapes and sizes, but certain closets have a range of dimensions worth mentioning. The typical bedroom closet with sliding doors is between 4- and 8-feet wide. In a master bedroom made for just one person, a closet may be as small as 4-feet wide. In rooms made for two people, as in family homes, closets generally run around 8-feet wide, which allows 4 feet of closet space for each person. Bedroom closets also have 24 inches of depth, meaning the distance from the front of the doors to the back wall is 2 feet.

Coat Closet Width and Depth

Coat closets are generally smaller in terms of width but deeper than a bedroom closet because the coats and jackets stored in this closet take up more space width-wise. The typical coat takes at least 28 inches of depth, so the average coat closet is at least this deep. The width is usually between 3 and 4 feet as longer coat closets are just not necessary. Size again depends on how many people are living in the home. Larger homes require more space to hang more coats, therefore the coat closet may be as wide as 6 feet.

Closet Height

Closet heights run from the standard 8 feet to 9-feet high, which goes for bedroom and coat closets. The height of the interior of the closet depends on how high the ceilings in the home are. While a higher ceiling does not affect the height of the doors, it does effect the closet ceiling height. For instance, a home with 8-foot ceilings will only have an 8-foot high closet ceiling, and a home with a 9-foot ceiling has a 9-foot high closet ceiling.
