Bedroom Ideas

If you want a new look in your bedroom but don't have the time or money for a complete overhaul, you may love some of these ideas. Most are easy to implement and, better yet, easy on the eyes. With just a little effort and a few changes, you can take your bedroom from ho-hum to fabulous. Get ready, because soon your new bedroom will be your favorite retreat. Does this Spark an idea?

Start With the Walls

Paint can do wonders for a room because it's a versatile medium that allows you a broad range of changes with ease. An accent wall changes the mood of the room without creating too much of a stir. The wall behind your bed usually works best for this by making your bed the focal point. Go soft or go bold--it's strictly a matter of taste.

If you want something that stands out a little more, consider stripes. Pick your two favorite colors and create a small stripe about two inches wide in one color to alternate with a wider stripe of four inches in width with the other. Looking for a way to really make it pop? Outline both colors with a third color that can be bold or simply white or black. Either way, stripes will change the entire look of your bedroom.

Make Changes to the Furniture

Don't forget that you can paint and stain furniture too. Take a wrought-iron bed frame to another level with spray paint. Sand your furniture and then add a new stain or color. It's more time-consuming than painting your walls, but no less dramatic. For a shabby chic appearance just sand, paint and then scrub a few places with steel wool to create that weathered look.

If your room seems empty, try adding an antique secretary for a traditional look. For a more modern look, a PAX wardrobe system from IKEA turns storage into art. These wardrobes come in a wide variety of colors and materials to suit any decorating style.

Change Your Headboard

A new headboard can make it look as though you have a whole new bedroom. Creating a new headboard can be as simple as using materials you already have around the house or making it a weekend project. Enlarge your favorite photos in black and white to create a sleek look above your bed. You can create a similar look with that old painting you have stored in the attic.

Upholstered headboards take only a couple of hours to put together and go a long way to liven up a boring bedroom. The only materials you'll need are plywood, batting (a layer of quilting material), fabric of your choice, and a sturdy staple gun. Simply hang it on the wall at the head of your bed for a beautiful addition to your bedroom.

Make old new again. Room dividers make interesting headboards. Even more striking are old shutters. These add a touch of charm to your room, and you have the satisfaction of knowing you stayed eco-friendly in your decorating choices.
