Solutions For Small Closets

Store winter coats in a coat closet to make room in bedroom closets.

Shelving, storage containers, collapsible hangers, and shoe racks are a highly effective and affordable means of maximizing limited closet space. Taking the time to create an organizational plan and utilizing appropriate resources can make a small closet space into efficient storage for clothing, shoes, and jewelry. Does this Spark an idea?

Storage Bins and Shelving

Whether you choose to implement built-in shelving or free standing shelves inside a small closet space, the end result is additional storage for closet contents. Built-in shelving may be constructed with brackets and particleboard shelves or with metal shelving that comes pre-assembled. In a clothing closet, storing easy-to-fold clothing that does not wrinkle easily, such as jeans, athletic clothes, and tee shirts, is a good way to make room for clothing that needs to be hung. In a closet used for household storage, shelving creates the option to stack items and categorize them according to household function.

Plastic or decorative cloth storage bins serve as inexpensive yet resourceful storage units and can be stacked for maximum space utilization. Store seasonal items or household items that are infrequently used in these bins, since they tend to come in larger sizes and may best serve as long term storage. Plastic storage bins with drawers offer a more consolidated storage method and are useful when storing items used on a daily basis.

Hanging Shoe Racks, Hooks, and Collapsible Hangers

Get creative with hangers and hooks to create additional space.

Storing shoes in their original boxes can be an inefficient use of space; try hanging shoe storage racks off of a door in order to free up floor or shelf space. Most hanging shoe racks offer storage for over ten pair of shoes, and some are spacious enough to store multiple pairs of shoes in each slot.

Collapsible hangers create additional space for a large amount of hanging clothes. Most collapsible hangers have a single hook and multiple tiers that allow you to hang several items of clothing on a single hanger. Collapsible hangers work best in tall closets with enough height to keep clothing hung on the bottom tiers off the ground.

Install hooks on a closet wall to hang neckties, necklaces, scarves and purses. Most hooks are durable enough to support multiple items and you can often find units with multiple hooks.

Seasonal Storage

As the seasons change, organize your clothing by what will be worn according to the climate. Use large suitcases or storage bins for off-season clothing and store them underneath a bed or in an attic.
