It has happened to many people: You store your leather or suede shoes in a damp or humid, dark closet and when you go to put them on you discover mold. Shoes are an investment, and mold can ruin any pair of shoes, from the cheapest brands to the most expensive. Fortunately, you can save most shoes that have gotten moldy. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Treat the area you keep your shoes so you don't have a recurring mold problem. You can buy moisture-reducing products such as Damp Rid in most grocery and discount stores. Place them in your closets.
2. Buy packets of silica gel from a craft or hobby supply store. Put the packets into the shoes that do not have mold as a preventative measure. Reserve a few packets to place in your moldy shoes after you have treated them.
3. Brush the surface of your moldy shoes with a nylon brush that has stuff bristles.
4. If you have moldy nubuck or suede shoes, purchase a suede cleaner from a shoe store and apply it according to the package's instructions. Place the shoes in the sun to dry, if possible.
5. Mix one cup of water with one cup of distilled white vinegar in a small bowl.
6. To clean moldy leather shoes, soak a clean, soft cloth in the vinegar mixture and completely wipe the surface of the shoes. Allow them to dry in the sun too.
