Make a Pocket Organizer for Shoes
Traditional shoe racks take up considerable space in closets. A hanging shoe organizer keep shoes safe and organized while taking advantage of space that normally goes unused. Making your own pocket organizer for shoes allows you to select fabrics that suit your décor. This pocket organizer saves time by using prequilted fabric, which is composed of batting basted between two layers of material. The resulting shoe organizer will have four rows with four pockets in each row. It can be hung on the wall, over a door or in a closet.
Instructions
1. Cut the prequilted fabric so that it is 44 inches long and 25 inches wide.
2. Use the vanishing ink marker to mark out a grid for the pocket organizer. Each pocket will be 10 inches long and 6 inches wide with a one-inch space above each. There is no space between the pockets going across, but leave half an inch on both edges of the prequilted fabric.
3. Cut the pocket fabric to make four pieces 11 inches tall and 25 inches wide.
4. Hem the pocket fabric pieces. Turn down the fabric a half inch running along the width and hem. Only hem one edge. Repeat with each piece of pocket fabric.
5. Attach the pocket fabric to the prequilted fabric. Start at the bottom, pinning the right side of the unhemmed edge of the pocket fabric to the prequilted fabric, matching it to the grid. Sew a half inch seam straight across. Repeat with each piece of pocket fabric.
6. Flip up the pocket fabric, iron and pin in place. Create the pockets by sewing straight seams vertically, following the grid.
7. Pin the double fold bias or quilting tape around the edges of the organizer and sew.
8. Cut four 6 inch pieces of bias tape. Fold to form loops for the dowel rod and attach to the wrong side of the top of the organizer.
