Turn Closets Into Workspaces

That unused closet in your home may make an ideal workspace. Depending on your workspace needs, converting a closet to a workspace is a project accomplished in relatively quick and inexpensive steps. As long as your closet meets the size requirements for your workspace, you may be surprised at potential usefulness of the space. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Evaluate the purpose of your workspace if the closet is feasible as a workspace. Think about what you plan to do in the room, will the closet allow enough room for your tools, equipment or desk.

2. Clean out anything that is already in the closet and store those items elsewhere. Remove any shelving, hardware, hanging bars, poles and hooks that are located in the current closet.

3. Check to see if the closet has electrical outlets. If not, contract with an electrician to add outlets and run wires into the closet for electricity. Maximize your outlets by using power strips for multiple plugs.

4. Add lighting including lamps and overhead lighting as space allows. Assure you have enough light to work. If possible and cost allows, have a contractor break through drywall to install a window or skylight into the closet. Natural light will make the closet appear bigger and add an airy feel into the workspace.

5. Paint the closet white or another light color. This will give the room a fresh feeling and light colors make a room seem larger.

6. Purchase a desk and shelving for your new workspace. Mount wall shelves for equipment, files and books as needed. Choose furniture that will fit by measuring the space in advance and measuring the furniture before purchasing.
