Bifold doors are the perfect architectural detail to hide ugly spaces.
Many closets look smaller because the opening is overwhelmed by a large door that swings inward, slides inconveniently or otherwise does not offer full access to the space. Almost every homeowner would agree that there never seems to be enough closet space for everything that needs to be stored, and what seems like a minor frustration may quickly escalate. Installing bifold closet doors that open outward can assist in allowing you to reach all areas of your closet to maximize that storage area. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Measure the width and height of the closet opening. Write these measurements down and take them with you to a lumber or home improvement store. Buy an appropriately sized bifold closet door kit; if your opening is between sizes, go one size larger and plane the edges evenly so that the doors are the correct dimensions.
2. Measure the width of the upper jamb of the opening. Find and mark the center. Attach the closet door tack to the molding (centered), using screws and a drill.
3. Drop a plumb bob from the top corners of the frame and mark the pivot points at the bottom of each side. Line up a floor bracket with the first mark and screw it in place. Do the same with the second bracket and the remaining mark.
4. Push the top pins of one door into the track of its corresponding side and fit the bottom pins into the bottom track. Do the same with the remaining door. Loosen or tighten the top pivot points using a screwdriver until the doors move easily in the track.
5. Stain or paint the closet doors as you desire. Measure the width of each door to find the center; mark the center of each door 3 feet from the floor. Drill a hole through each mark and screw on the knobs.
