Build Cedar Closets

Build Cedar Closets

If you want the look and scent of a real cedar closet, but what you've got is a standard old closet, it's easier than you might think to transform it. Cedar closet kits, available at your local home improvement store, allow you to cover regular plaster or drywall closet walls with cedar from top to bottom, making it indistinguishable from a cedar closet that was built in from the start. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Search for each stud in the closet wall, using your electronic stud finder. Mark vertical lines showing where each stud is, using your level and pencil. Repeat for each wall.

2. Draw a level horizontal line along the bottom of the wall, at the height of a tile plus 1/2 inch, using your level and pencil. Repeat on each wall.

3. Measure the length of the wall and cut one cedar board at that length, using your miter saw.

4. Set the board on the wall with the tongue side of the tongue-and-groove edging facing up. Line up the top of the board with the horizontal line (so about 1/2 inch is between the bottom edge of the board and the floor). Secure the board to the wall with your trim nailer, putting pairs of nails at every point where the board crosses studs (according to the lines you drew on the wall).

5. Measure and cut the next board, set it on the top of the first board and lock them together by the tongue-and-groove connections. Instead of nailing through the face as before, shoot one nail through the edge of the side that's facing up (the tongue side), putting the nail just above the tongue at an angle into the wall, so it won't be visible on the board face.

6. Repeat the process with each board, working your way up the wall toward the ceiling. Cut the top piece along the length with a table saw so it fits at the ceiling. Repeat the whole process to completely cover each wall in cedar.

7. Cut trim on your miter saw to sit along the bottom and top of the walls (where they meet the ceiling and floor), and in the vertical corners between the walls. Secure the trim with your trim nailer, covering all the edges of the cedar.
