Install Shelving For An Inhome Office

Twin-track shelf standards make the unit sturdy.

One of the simplest types of shelving to install for your in-home office is track shelving. Using twin-track shelf standards will give you a sturdy shelving unit. To align your bookshelves, measure the books and items you want to place on each shelf. Add about 1 inch of clearance above the books for your fingers to fit when taking your books off the shelf. Assemble your tools and supplies, then get started and in a few hours you will have sturdy and functional in-home office shelving. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Slide the stud finder along the wall until you hear a beep or see the red line indicator to locate one edge of your wall stud. Mark the area on the wall with your pencil. Move the stud finder over 1 foot, then slide it back from the opposite direction to find the other edge of the stud and mark it with your pencil. Move over 32 inches and repeat the process to find the second stud.

2. Hold one of the metal shelf standards between the stud pencil marks on the wall, where you want the top shelf to start. Mark where the top screw hole will go with your pencil. Make a 1/8-inch pilot hole for the screw at your pencil mark with your screwdriver, then screw in your 2 1/2-inch screw firmly but not too tightly.

3. Place your level next to the edge of the shelf standard and adjust it until it is vertically plumb. Mark where the bottom screw will go with your pencil. Screw a pilot hole at the pencil mark where the bottom screw hole should be for the shelf standard. Screw in your 2 1/2-inch screw through the bottom screw hole.

4. Hook a shelf bracket into each both the installed and uninstalled standards, at the same level.

5. Place the uninstalled standard 32 inches away from the installed standard, at the wall stud pencil marks. Lay your level across the two brackets, then raise and lower the uninstalled standard until it is level. Mark the top and bottom screw hole with your pencil. Screw pilot holes for the screws into the uninstalled standard at the pencil marks. Screw in your 2 1/2-inch screws through the top and bottom screw holes.

6. Add the remaining pairs of brackets onto each metal shelf standard, making sure your books and office items will fit. Slide your shelves into place on the brackets. Drill a pilot hole about halfway through the front of each bracket at the small shelf mounting hole. Hold each shelf down as you screw a 1 1/4-inch flat-head wood screw through each bracket until all the shelves are installed.
