Children collect an assortment of toys and books during the early years of their lives. Finding a way to keep these toys organized can be a challenge. The key is to make sure only items that are still used are kept, and that they ones that remain are organized in such a way that they can be easily located.
Keep What Is Useful
Do not hold on to toys and books that your child no longer needs. These should not be stored in an area where they can be easily accessible, because they are wasting space. If you wish to save these toys for the possibility of another child in the future, store them in an attic, basement or public storage facility. If additional children are not a consideration, either discard the toys and books or donate them to a charity. Keeping toys and books that are no longer used will clutter your house and make it harder for your child to find her more frequently used toys.
Have Your Children Help
Work with your children to determine the toys and books that they use the most. Keep these items in an area that is easiest to locate and access. This can include one small bookcase in a child's room for his books on one shelf and his favorite toys on another shelf. By allowing your child to help choose his favorite items, it will be easier to determine which toys should be kept where they are available for everyday use.
Storage Bins
Place the items that you and your child determine are toys and books she wishes to keep but does not play with every day in storage bins. These storage bins can be kept in closets or under beds to save space in the house. Have your child go through her books and toys between two and four times a year to cycle them between her favorites and ones she would like to have in storage.
