Always find your shoes in an organized closet.
Closet storage systems help answer the "What do I wear?" question by organizing all your clothing so that you can easily see it and find it. In an efficient closet, hang your clothing on rails, lay it on open shelves or hide it in drawers and storage boxes. Mixing and matching these storage elements allows you to design a closet system that suits your budget and clothing organization needs, whatever the size of your wardrobe. Does this Spark an idea?
Hanging Rails
Hanging rails hold most of the clothes in a closet. Identify how much hanging space you need for long items of clothing, such as dresses and coats, and install one rail for this, leaving space underneath for alternate storage. Install two hanging rails, one above the other, to hold your shorter-hanging clothing, including blouses, shirts, skirts and pants. To maximize your hanging space, use pant and skirt hangers that hold more than one item, and tie hangers for multiple ties or scarves. Use thin hangers for everything else to fit more on the rail. Individual pegs on the wall also add hanging organization to the closet.
Shelves
Many closets systems have shelves above the hanging rails. The depth of the shelves and how far they are spaced apart vertically depend on what you place on the shelves. If you plan to store out-of-season clothing in boxes, you'll need deep shelves while shallower shelves can hold your shoe and purse collection. Install specialty shelving below the hanging rail for items that you want to keep in view. Angled shelving holds shoes while bookcase-type shelving keeps your sweaters and T-shirts neatly folded flat.
Drawers and Boxes
Drawers and storage boxes are suitable for clothing that you do not use very often or want to keep out of sight. To avoid clutter in drawers, match the size of the drawer to the clothing it will contain. Shallow drawers allow all of your pairs of socks to be organized in one layer, and deeper drawers stack your sweaters safely. Small storage boxes within the drawers keep small items such as jewelry together, and larger storage containers fit on the shelves or on the floor under the hanging rail. For ease of use, use transparent storage boxes so you can see the contents at a glance, or label them clearly.
Materials
Closet storage systems come in a variety of materials. Once you've determined which elements of the system you need, your selection of the appropriate material is based on budget and practicality. Open wire shelving, usually in white, allows air circulation through your clothing and is easily cleaned. Sets of drawers are also available in this style. Melamine-covered shelving supplies a solid base for your closet items, and drawers in this material don't allow dust to enter. Wood storage elements add an air of luxury to your closet as well as a pleasant fragrance and natural moth-repelling properties.
