Sailing is just one of the many popular activities off the coast of Long Island.
According to the New York Times, the New York City suburb of Long Island is the largest island connected to the continental United States and home to some of the premiere beaches in the country. The island also features vineyards and historical attractions dating back to the 17th century as well as charming towns full of antique shops, cutting edge restaurants and the mansions of some of the country's earliest business magnates. Travelers to the area will have no trouble finding luxury hotels on Long Island. Amenities include ocean views, restaurants with white glove service and castle-like atmospheres.
The Allegria Hotel
The New York Times reports the Allegria Hotel's location on Long Island's South Shore is 25 miles from Manhattan -- the trip takes approximately an hour by train via the Long Island Railroad. The hotel itself is a former nursing home transformed into an ocean-front resort with 143 guest rooms and suites. According to the newspaper, rooms on the east and west side of the hotel are called "beach view" rooms, and rooms on the south side are ocean-front rooms. The reviewer called his room "inviting and airy" and noted despite warnings of potential noise from the L'onda Lounge and Atlantica restaurant located on the second floor, all he heard was the sound of the ocean.
Guest rooms feature double-sided closets so clothing can be accessed from the room or the bathroom. The hotel also has a roof-top swimming pool and spa, a gym with ocean views and 24-hour room service. The hotel also offers tunnel access to the Atlantic Ocean boardwalk.
