Childproof Ikea Dresser Drawers

IKEA's dresser drawers require childproofing measures as any dressers would if you want to keep your child safe. While IKEA may provide some of the accessories necessary to childproof certain dresser models, you have to purchase most safety accessories separately. When childproofing any dresser, it's most important that it's secured so your child can't climb it or pull the dresser over onto himself. And placing protection on any rough edges prevents your child from unnecessary bumps and bruises. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Keep objects off the top of an IKEA dresser to prevent them from falling on your child. Having objects on top of the dresser also makes it more enticing for your child to try to climb the dresser.

2. Attach anti-tip furniture straps to the IKEA dresser and the wall. Some IKEA dressers come with the straps or you can purchase them separately. Screw the straps into the top of the dresser and then into a stud in the wall; use a stud finder to locate a stud.

3. Install locking straps on each side of each drawer or install drawer locks inside each drawer to prevent your child from opening them. Locking straps secure the ends closed on each drawer, while drawer locks are placed inside each drawer -- usually with one on both ends. Both are secured with screws or adhesive.

4. Adhere foam edge guards on the top edges of the dresser to protect your child from hurting herself if she bumps into the edge.
